Dave Gilligan (a very talented photographer and graphic designer) and his new bride were not your typical newlyweds. As he tells it, they didn’t want to go on a typical “sun holiday” so instead opted for a far more interesting honeymoon on the Trans-Mongolian Railway. These photographs of windows were taken in Irkutsk as well as around Lake Baikal. Apparently, all the windows are painted a shade of Green, White or Blue to hopefully ward off evil spirits. Each and every one seems to me like a small fairy tale. If something about these images grabs your imagination, there are two books on Siberia that I would highly recommend reading: Colin Thubron’sIn Siberia, and Ian Frazier’s Travels in Siberia, which was released only just last year.
I never did that well at physics in school. But, in hindsight, I think I want to blame the teacher for making a subject that is so fascinating and poetic into something utterly prosaic. These videos are super cool. From the folks over at Wanken.
I just saw this now (4 12 times) on Frances Mao’s tumblr blog. I already liked The Black Keys a whole lot. Now I am completely smitten. The early release from their new album, El Camino. And here is the backstory to this video.
The other day Swissmiss posted an item about Pantone Christmas ornaments. Someone commented that they thought the ornaments were fishing bobbers. I saw the rationale there, and then clicked on the wiki link provided by the commenter. This took me into the rabbit hole that is the internet. Within minutes, I knew considerably more about fishing lures than I ever thought necessary…although, I’ve always been interested in hand tied flies. Anyway, I found a nice image of some old lures and one photograph which details the different stages of the making of a lure. Always a sucker for process. I thought these were lost forever. Imagine my joy at finding them sandwiched in between the pages of some soon-to-be-thrown-out magazine. These are my brother and his partner’s to do lists. If you’ve been here for awhile, you may have seen the earlier iterations here, here and here. He has been feeding them to me over the past year or so. I gasp every time I look at them.
