Chicks

Friday 05.27.11

I walked into the local health food store yesterday and thought there was some prerecorded bird track playing. One of those mixes that’s supposed to soothe the nerves. But after about 15 seconds I realized that the sound was coming from a closed cardboard box. When opened…this is what I saw. I practically jumped up and down. These little gals were en-route to a farm. I think they are pretty anxious to get out. If you look closely you’ll note some none-too-friendly pecking going on.

Ace Hotel Room 1021 from Dana Tanamachi on Vimeo.

Dana Tanamachi is a graphic designer and “custom chalk letterer” who is brimming with both talent and skill. Watching the creative process in fast forward is addictive. And seeing her here, creating a custom wall for a room in the Ace Hotel in NYC is so feeding my habit. First came across her on designspiration. Another addiction.

I used to play Cat’s Cradle ALL the time. Notice the heavy breathing in the background?

Not Your Grandma’s Farm

I am alternately fascinated and horrified by this video. The automation and sophistication on view are amazing. And I am a huge fan of watching an assembly line in action. But that either of these are required to process something as self-contained as an egg, tells me something is terribly terribly wrong. And from what I know about factory farming, I am pretty sure that I’m right about this one. It’s all about volume.
